Chassis jig and structural repair
When an impact reaches the structure, swapping the outer panel isn't enough. We measure the car on a chassis jig and bring it back to the manufacturer's dimensions.
Why checking the structure matters
Safety in a future crash
The structure is designed to absorb crash energy in a specific way. If it stays deformed, it may not protect you as it should.
Panels that fit again
A shifted structure shows up as uneven gaps, doors or tailgates that don't shut properly and new panels that never quite line up.
Equipment for every make
We have chassis jigs and the equipment to work to the standards every manufacturer requires.
What's included
Jig work is precise and done in stages. This is what we do with your car.
Measuring reference points
We compare reference points on the chassis with the manufacturer's measurements to see exactly what has moved and by how much.
Controlled pulling
We anchor the car to the jig and pull in the opposite direction to the impact, measuring at every step.
Replacing structural parts
If a chassis leg, crossmember or pillar can't be saved, we replace it following the manufacturer's repair method.
Protecting joints
We seal and protect the areas we've worked on to prevent corrosion in joints and cavities.
Final gap adjustment
We refit doors, bonnet, wings and tailgate and check that gaps and locks are as they left the factory.
Not all structural damage is worth repairing. If the repair is out of proportion to the car's value, we'll tell you plainly and, where insurance is involved, the loss adjuster will assess it too.
What a chassis jig is and what it's for
A chassis jig is a heavy-duty bench the car is clamped to by its anchor points. With a measuring system, it lets us compare the car's actual geometry with the dimensions published by the manufacturer. With pulling towers and chains, it lets us bring the structure back into place in a controlled way, without stressing the metal more than necessary.
Modern cars have a monocoque structure: the bodywork and chassis form a single unit. That's why an impact that looks like a panel job may have shifted a front chassis leg, a crossmember or a door frame.
Signs the structure may be affected
After a heavy knock, a few clues suggest the car should be checked on the jig even if it doesn't look serious from outside:
- Uneven gaps between bonnet, wings and doors.
- Doors or tailgate that are hard to shut or rattle.
- Cracks in the sealer or paint along inner joints.
- Outer panels that won't line up, even new ones.
- Creases in the metal away from the point of impact.
On the mountain roads of southern Tenerife, a car with altered geometry shouldn't just carry on as normal: if something seems wrong after a knock, bring it in as soon as you can.
How structural repair is done
First we remove the damaged outer panels and measure. With the data in front of us, we plan the pulls: direction, force and order. We pull gradually and measure again until the car is within tolerance. If a part can't be recovered, we cut it out and replace it following the procedure the manufacturer sets for that model.
When a structural part is replaced, it goes back on with the same type of joint it had from the factory. On steel bodies that's usually spot welding, with the welds well spaced so the metal doesn't overheat; aluminium parts are often joined by riveting combined with structural adhesive. Before joining, the flanges are flattened, the paint is cleaned off the joint area and the inner faces of the metal are protected, because they can't be reached afterwards. Aluminium must also be kept away from steel residue to avoid galvanic corrosion.
Once the structure is right, we refit the outer panels, adjust the gaps and move on to paint. We seal the joints as they came from the factory and apply cavity wax inside the hollow sections, so the repaired area resists damp and salt air just like the rest of the car.
This type of repair usually follows an insurance claim. If so, we deal with your insurer: see our insurer liaison service and our guide to the loss assessment. If there's no insurance involved, we give you a written estimate before we start.
Frequently asked questions
Is a car repaired on a jig as safe as before?
If the repair follows the manufacturer's measurements and methods, the aim is to return the structure to its original condition. When that can't be done properly, we tell you.
How do I know if my car needs the jig?
It isn't always visible. If the impact was heavy, or you notice uneven gaps, body rattles or doors that don't close properly, we measure it and find out.
Does it affect the ITV?
The ITV (MOT) checks, among other things, the condition of the structure and bodywork. A properly repaired car shouldn't have problems; one with a deformed structure will.
Will insurance cover it?
If the damage comes from an incident your policy covers, it usually does. The loss assessment decides, and we help you with the paperwork.
We work with your insurance company
If your car has suffered an incident covered by your insurance, you don't have to be the go-between: we coordinate with your insurer and its loss adjuster so the repair is authorised and done properly.
It's one of the reasons many customers come to us: less paperwork, fewer phone calls and the car back the way it should be.

See serviceWhat people often believe, and what actually happens
Six ideas we often hear at the garage that are worth clearing up.
“A car that's been in an accident is never right again.”
If the structure is brought back to its measurements on a jig and joints, sealing and protection are reproduced as at the factory, the repair is sound and safe.
“My insurer decides where my car is repaired.”
As a rule you can choose the garage. Some policies offer perks at their partner garages: we help you read yours before you decide.
“A small dent can wait.”
A scrape that lifts the paint leaves bare metal exposed. With the sun and salty air in the south of the island, corrosion sets in sooner than you think.
“Eco-friendly paint is lower quality.”
A paint with fewer solvents can give an equally durable finish. What makes the difference is the preparation and the application.
“A used car that looks good has never been in a crash.”
A well-polished respray can go unnoticed at first glance. A paint thickness gauge and a check of panel gaps, sealing and welds give it away.
“It doesn't matter where it's painted: paint is paint.”
What you can't see —surface preparation, anti-corrosion protection and painting in a booth— is what decides how long the repair lasts.
